Happy New Year!

Next week I've been asked to give a talk about "Real Women of the Bible." The idea is to meditate on the Scriptures until we get a clear image of the silent heroines of the faith, and the virtues they encourage us to emulate.

Take Sarah, for example. Now, imagine that while you were in your prime your husband told people you were his SISTER -- twice -- in order to save his own neck? Her son Isaac thought Pops was so smoothe, he tried the same thing on his wife. Unfortunately it was on the same king, who remembered the trick Abraham had pulled, resulting in the wombs of his entire country to be sewn shut by the Fertility Angel.

Both Abigail and Jael overrode their husbands poor judgment, and spared the lives of countless men. Dear Judith, all she did was bat her eyes and, FWOCK, off came the head of the oppressor. All without breaking a sweat, or compromising her virtue.

My favorite gal, however, is Tamar. When her father-in-law refuses to do his duty by her, consigning her to a lifetime of widows rags, she takes matters into her own hands. You can almost hear it. "Me? An adulteress? Perhaps. Let's see... Here's the ring and emblem of the guy I was with. Look familiar?...."

Men problems and fertility frustrations, forced anonymity and persistent underestimation. The problems that plagued our sisters in faith haven't changed much, have they? St. Scholastica, prayer warrior and faithful maiden, pray for us.

Who is YOUR favorite "leading lady" in the Scriptures?
